Title: Management strategies for pastures and beef cattle in the Middle-South: The I-20 Corridor
Abstract: Warm-season perennial grasses are the basic forages for pastures in the I-20 Corridor. Bermudagrasses and bahiagrass are the primary perennial grasses used on upland sites, and lowland sites include dallisgrass on more wet-soil conditions. Over-wintering for cows and calves is accomplished using conserved forages such as hay and baleage, overseeding with small grain, ryegrass and/or clovers, and, for some site-specific areas, with tall fescue. Stockpiled bermudagrass pastures can provide grazing without the use of hay during November and December. This mid-South Hardiness Zone is dominated by cow–calf production; however, forage systems and management strategies provide opportunities for stocker calves grazing during summer or winter. Soils are generally acidic with low-organic matter and low-nitrogen content. Fertilizers with nitrogen and limestone are used on many pastures to enhance sustainability and increase forage production for increased carrying capacity.
