Title: The Main Character's Defense Mechanism in Cormac Mccarthy's Novel The Road
Abstract: This thesis tries to analyze afiction novel that is written by an American Author, Cormac McCarty under title The Road. This novel tells about the journey south taken by Father and his son after unnamed catastrophe has struck the world. Here, the writer focuses on the one main character, Father, his defense mechanism and how he shows it. The method of the study is descriptive qualitative because this study is to explain defense mechanism of Father in the novel The Road. The data is taken from the novel itself. The writer uses the theory of Sigmund Freud about defense mechanism as primary theory and use new criticism as secondary theory to conduct this study. There are seven types of defense mechanism undergone by Father; they are repression, regression, denial, projection, rationalization, introjection and displacement. The data itself is analyzed by reading, understanding and identifying its novel. By this study, the writer finds that Father uses repression, regression, denial, projection, rationalization, introjection and displacement. Father perfoms his defense mechanism to cover his anxiety. Finally he uses defense mechanism in many ways.
