Abstract: In this paper are presented two control methods for single-phase five level inverter: staircase modulation (SM) and pulse width modulation (PWM). In both cases the switching sequences have been chosen so that the number of semiconductor devices which switch at a certain time to be minimal. For the PWM modulation, it has been studied how the arrangement of the carrier signals influences the total harmonic distortion factor (THD). The chosen switching sequences ensures voltages balancing on the inverter capacitors.
