Elsewhere I have begun exploring in some detail how the Orient is represented in one or another specific work.1 For present purposes, though, I would prefer to set the lens to a wider focus, and consider some general aspects of the problem of ?representing? or ?constructing? the Orient on the musical stage. I will take my examples from a number of works, mainly 19th-century and early 20th-century operas of patently serious intent, but making occasional reference to lighter works of other periods (Mozart; Rodgers and Hammerstein) that set some facet of the problem in relief.Read More
