Title: The Morphological and Phonological Constraints in English Plural Nouns
Abstract: 영어명사의 복수굴절체계(plural inflection system)는 크게 규칙형(regular form)과 불규칙형(irregular form)으로 나눌 수 있다. 고대에 성(gender), 수(number), 격(case)에 따라 다른 복잡한 복수굴절체계를 갖추고 있던 영어명사는 중세이후 소수의 모음변이형(mutation or umlaut)과 불변화복수형을 제외하고 대부분이 고대 강변화 남성명사복수형 -as(-es)에서 유래한 -(e)s로 평준화되었다. 그렇다면 단순화된 굴절체계와 변화를 겪지 않은 굴절체계가 서로 다른 문법기반을 가지게 된 것인가에 대하여 논의해 볼 필요가 있다. 한 언어가 다른 언어와 접촉하면서 필요에 따라 어휘를 차용하여 풍부한 어휘고(word stock)를 갖출 수 있지만, 문법구조는 변화에 있어서 어휘보다 유연하지 않은 것 같다. 영어는 역사상 외세로부터의 정치적, 문화적, 지리적 접촉에 의하여 들어온 많은 차용어(loanword)를 보유하고 있고, 인도․유럽어족의 동종 계열 언어들에 비해서 명사의 굴절체계는 비교적 단순하다.BR 본 연구는 형태․음운론적 관점에서 현재의 단순화된 명사복수형태와 고대와 중세를 거쳐 현대까지 계승되어온 불규칙변화의 형태들이 한 시대에 함께 쓰이고 있는 것은 사실상 동일한 문법적 기제를 공유하고 있기 때문임을 제안한다. 한 언어에서 어떤 성분이 표면적 굴절형태가 다르더라도 동일한 문법기능을 목적으로 사용된다면, 형태소의 제약도 역시 동일하게 작용한다는 것이다. 언어 사용자가 많아질수록 어휘는 풍부해지더라도 그 언어의 문법이 단순화되어 가는 것이 보편적 현상임에도 불구하고 여러 형태가 여전히 함께 사용되고 있다는 것은 그 증거가 될 수 있을 것이다.
