Title: Fully biobased polylactide/epoxidized soybean oil resin blends with balanced stiffness and toughness by dynamic vulcanization
Abstract: Abstract In this study, we report fully biobased PLA blends with balanced stiffness and toughness through dynamic vulcanization with sebacic acid cured epoxidized soybean oil (VESO) precursors with various contents. The effect of VESO content, from 5% to 20%, on the morphology, thermal transitions, mechanical properties and toughening mechanisms were investigated in detail. The results indicated that PLA/VESO blends were partially miscible and showed phase-separated morphology with VESO dispersed in PLA matrix uniformly regardless of the VESO content. The particle size of dispersed VESO increased with its content. PLA/VESO blends with 10 wt% showed the optimal balanced mechanical strength and toughness with tensile toughness and impact strength improved by ~4200% and ~560% and the tensile strength and Young's modulus reduced by only 26.7% and 22.2%, respectively, compared to neat PLA.
