Abstract: Our perception of the environment depends on seamless integration of signals from multiple different sensory modalities. This process is equally important for our perception of our own body. The feeling of ownership over one’s body is a crucial aspect of self-identity and is essential for guiding complex motor behaviors. Through the use of the Rubber Hand Illusion and several other variations of this experimental paradigm, researchers have been able to untangle the role of various sensory modalities in producing this feeling of body ownership. These processes depend on a complex network of brain structures and the findings from this field of research may have implications for our understanding of some of the features of clinical disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia.
