Title: Studying Protestantism in a Catholic and secular context: lessons for a comparative sociology of religion
Abstract: I will begin my sociological self-portrait by describing the academic path that led me
from the University of Strasbourg to the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris.
I will discuss the impact of this career move on the development of my identity as a
sociologist of religion, and will mention various research topics that have meant a lot
to me. The second part of this chapter focuses on the sociology of Protestantism, and
attempts to demonstrate the comparative advantages of studying this particular
religious world for a general sociology of religion.
