Evans covers Simon’s Institutiones in Sacram Paginam 7.1–67. A facing-page translation is included. This section of the Institutiones was a work of particular importance in the story of the twelfth-century christological debate. Simon of Tournai belonged roughly to one of the active ‘schools’ of competing opinion—that led by Gilbert of Poitiers—and he wrote this treatment at a key moment in the early 1160s, soon after Peter Lombard had added the material in his Sentences to the discussion in the late 1150s. The introduction outlines Simon’s life and then discusses his writings, seeking to establish a chronology, or at least a sequence of composition for them. There follows an analysis of Simon’s theological position against its contemporary competitors. The introduction concludes with the manuscript tradition and the editorial conventions adopted. There is a comprehensive bibliography and index.Read More
