Title: AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING IN THE NOVEL CINTA BY OLLIE
Abstract: Code switching is a common term for alternative use of two languages, varieties of language or even speech styles. Nowadays, the use of code switching has already been very common. It can be found in movies, magazines, host utterances, songs, teachersÂ’ communication in teaching, and such literary works as novel.
This study aimed to analyze code switching in the novel “Cinta” by Ollie. It answered the following research problems: 1) What are code switchings used in “Cinta” novel. 2) What kinds of code switching used in “Cinta” novel. 3) What are the possible reasons of the author’s use of code switching in “Cinta” novel?. The purpose of this study are to find code switching; the kinds of code switching; and the possible reason of the author’s use code switching in “Cinta” novel. This study used a descriptive qualitative design to gathering data. The instrument of this study is document analysis. The document analysis is the script of this novel.
The result of this study showed that: 1) The writer found 100 sentences include of code switching used in “Cinta” novel. 2) 4 kinds of code switching used in “Cinta” novel. First, Intra-sentential switches, it was found 84 sentences. Second, Inter-sentential, it was found 12 sentences. Third, Establish continuity with previous speaker, it was found 3 sentences. Forth, Tag code switching, it was found 1 sentence. The most dominant kind of code switching used in “Cinta” novel is Intra-sentential switches. 3) 8 possible reason of the author’s use in “Cinta” novel. There are: 1) Being emphatic about something, it was found 11 sentences. 2) Interjection, it was found 4 sentences. 3) Repetition used for clarification, it was found 5 sentences. 4) Expressing group identity, it was found 5 sentences. 5) Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor, it was found 1 sentence. 6) Talking about particular topic, it was found 29 sentences. 7) To soften and strengthen request or command, it was found 6 sentences. 8) Because of real lexical need, it was found 44 sentences. The most dominant kind of reason in using code switching in “Cinta” novel is Because of real lexical need.
