Abstract: This chapter introduces the concept of a knot invariant. Knot invariants are mathematical devices for determining when knots and links are inequivalent. It discusses various approaches to the construction of knot invariants, giving examples that arise from each approach. Particular attention is paid to knot polynomials defined through skein relations.
