Title: Presentation of the 2019 SSCI Founders’ Medal Award
Abstract: Presenting the Founders’ Medal of the Southern Society of Clinical Investigation to Tonette Krousel-Wood is an honor and privilege. Before presenting this, I wanted to reference the list of past award recipients, and you see the early origins of the Founders’ Medal, and you see giants in American medicine, not just southern medicine, but American medicine – Eugene Stead, Tinsley Harrison, Donald Seldin, George Burch, Grant Liddle – I could go on and on. We have got some modern giants also – Karl Weber, Bo Sanders, David Ploth – I would not list them all. Tremendous history that makes me feel confident in the future of the society. And, today is no different. In fact, one of the things that I noted was that we have entered a modern era: we have only 3 women receive the Founders’ Medal, counting today, but it is 2 of the last 5, so we are making a lot of progress.
