Title: Nihilism in Ivan Turgenevs Fathers and Children
Abstract: The study examines nihilism illustration in the novel Fathers and Children written by Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev. Two basic questions of this study are, first, how is nihilism represented in the novel? Second, how does nihilism affect major characters of the novel? The writer believes that Nietzsche’s theory of nihilism is appropriate to be applied in conducting this research.
This research will be a qualitative research where the data is taken from the novel Fathers and Children (English version), library research, journals, electronics, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study reveals that nihilism is vividly pictured within the novel. The idea of nihilism portrayed in the character of a young university student named Bazarov. He explores various elements of nihilism. Those elements are divided into three, lack of desire, lack of value and lack of feeling. Nihilism becomes one of the main themes of the novel as it influences major characters of the novel and raises a gap between generations as well.
