Abstract: This article summarizes theoretical and empirical developments and trends in the sociology of crime. The history of the field is reviewed first, followed by discussion of its primary methods, data sources, and levels of explanation. Attention then turns to the social distribution of crime, dominant theoretical traditions, and issues of crime control. We close with brief comments concerning continuity and change in the contexts and processes associated with crime.
