Title: Supporting Inclusion Through Place Based Learning Experience in Design and Technology Pre-Service Teacher Education Programs
Abstract: Design and Technology Education provides opportunity for pre-service students to engage in a range of authentic learning experiences within the community. Gruenwald (2003) terms such experiences as place- based and suggests that these experiences are necessary, 'so that the education of citizens might have some direct bearing on the well being of the social and ecological places people actually inhabit'(p.3). This paper reports on a placed- based experience that was initially implemented to develop pre-service teacher‘s understandings of the use of technology (design based sensory teaching aids) to support the learning of students with both physical and intellectual disabilities. This paper will highlight the added value that place- based learning experiences provided to pre-service teachers who not only developed an understanding of the use of technology to support student learning but also reported a deeper understanding of disability together with a more positive attitude towards inclusion.
