Title: Registration of High‐Breeding‐Value Male Hop Germplasm USDA 21089M
Abstract: USDA 21089M (Reg. No. GP‐35, PI 558573) was released to the public 6 Dec. 2011. This germplasm has been utilized by the USDA‐ARS for hop ( Humulus lupulus L. var. lupulus ) varietal development for several decades. Nonagency interest in this germplasm was expressed and release of this material is considered beneficial for the U.S. public. USDA 21089M is a wild accession from Slovenia originally collected for its resistance to aphids. Its genetic background is unknown, although genetic fingerprinting studies show it to be unrelated to other well‐known European landraces. The unique characteristics of this germplasm are its demonstrated superior breeding value and good storage‐ability. USDA 21089M is used primarily as a male parent for aroma‐type hop germplasm. The release of USDA 21089M will provide both public and private breeders with new germplasm for varietal development.
