Abstract: This article seeks to contribute to establishing the methodological framework for a “gender semiotics” within French Information and Communication Sciences. This refers to the way in which the semiotic approach constructs gender as a research object and understands it as a concept. Gender results from the paradoxical construction/naturalization process of sex difference and is also affected by the discourse of individuals. Gender semiotics is a cross-disciplinary object that draws upon the disciplinary opening up of a semiotic approach based on a communication perspective and using proven methods to apprehend the complexity of meaning in the making. In turn, gender reverses the perspective of semiotics, leading it to consider the relationships between sexes that construct meaning. This study of the way in which gender is constructed is illustrated by an analysis of a social and dating online community for seniors.
