In structural grammar, most work focused on structural analysis rather than word formation. Some scholars have argued that word formation in Korean should be concerned with syntax and phonology as well as morphology. Syntactic affixation in Korean is a representative example. Autosegmental phonology has opened up an entirely new way of explaining the phenomena of reduplication in Korean. This chapter introduces the reader to the basic ideas of word formation in Korean, to give an account of how the ideas that today constitute word formation arose and, then summarizes some remaining issues.
