Title: Teaching and Learning Science in Early Childhood Care and Education
Abstract: This chapter explores research regarding why it is important to begin science education in the early years, and ways to engage young children in science activities. It explains the importance of conversations and discussions in building scientific conceptions through literacy. Early childhood science education is important for all children regardless of gender, ethnicity, ability/disability, or socioeconomic background. Interdisciplinary approaches that combine science and literacy have become more widely used in early childhood classrooms. Early childhood care and education teachers sometimes feel more competent in teaching literacy and less so in science. Research indicates that it is best to meet young children's science learning needs through hands on inquiry-based instruction, which helps all children to better conceptualize science concepts. Interdisciplinary strategies, in which teachers target science along with literacy objectives, have been of particular interest for scholars who have investigated the use of children's literature to learn science, and verbal interactions with teacher and children.
