Title: Proceedings of the 1st ACM international workshop on Heterogeneous sensor and actor networks
Abstract: It gives us a great pleasure to present you the technical program of the 1st ACM International Workshop on Heterogeneous Sensor and Actor Networks, HeterSanet 2008. This is the result of the common effort of two initially separated groups, which converged into a very harmonic program. HeterSanet is a high-quality workshop focusing on all the issues related to the integration of sensor and actuator networks with existing infrastructure networks like wired networks, and wireless local/wide-area networks: from underlying technologies to applications and services.
For this first year the workshop received in total 30 submissions, and the world-wide scientific community contributed in a quite uniform way. This shows that the community of researchers working on sensor networks, and in particular on the specific aspects of actuating and heterogeneity, is quickly growing worldwide, and HeterSanet positions itself as a reference forum for the community of researchers working in this field.
This interesting number of submissions provided an excellent opportunity for a high-quality program. The members of the Technical Program Committee, together with several additional external reviewers, worked hard for providing the basis for the final paper selection. We finally selected 14 papers for presentation in the 4 workshop technical sessions. Overall, the final program is excellent and diverse, and covers both fundamental issues in sensor network operations and communications, as well as emerging topics. The large number of submissions and the low acceptance rate (less than 50%) represents an excellent starting point for a workshop, and further confirms that the HeterSanet is going to be established as a worldwide reference event in the field.
