Title: La influencia de la cultura japonesa en los pintores vascos, desde mediados del siglo xix a mediados del siglo xx
Abstract: Este trabajo de investigacion tiene como finalidad el estudio de la influencia de la cultura japonesa entre los pintores vascos, en relacion al marcado interes que desperto la citada civilizacion en Occidente a mediados del siglo XIX y, en especial en Paris, centro divulgador de las corrientes artisticas mas innovadoras que surgieron en el momento, como alternativa al academicismo dominante en Roma, aunque tambien nos detenemos en el asentamiento de la cultura japonesa en Espana, principalmente en Barcelona y Madrid. Mostramos la importancia de la bonanza economica en el Pais Vasco, que junto con una poblacion mas instruida -principalmente, a traves de la puesta en marcha de las Escuelas de Artes y Oficios, la Universidad de Deusto y la Escuela de Ingenieros Industriales de Bilbao- actuaron como motores de la cultura. Las Exposiciones de Arte Moderno de Bilbao (1900-1910), publicaciones como El Coitao y Hermes, las actividades desarrolladas a traves de los miembros de la Asociacion de Artistas Vascos, fomentaron el interes por el arte, buscando transmitir una imagen moderna del Pais Vasco. Tras el gusto por los objetos chinos en el siglo XVIII y la tendencia del gusto por el exotismo en el siglo XIX, el orientalismo, que se manifestaba por una parte en el mundo arabe, encontro su maxima expresion en el ambito de Asia Oriental, convirtiendose en una rica y sorprendente fuente de inspiracion para artistas de la talla de Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Mariano Fortuny y Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa, entre otros. Tambien lo fue para los artistas vascos, y para estudiarlo, los hemos distribuido en cuatro grupos, basandonos en la fecha de nacimiento y su necesidad de viajar a Paris para formarse. Asi, en el primer grupo, denominado 'precursores' incluimos a: Fco. de Paula Bringas y Bringas (1827-1855), Antonio Ma Lecuona Echaniz (1831-1907), Juan de Barroeta y Anguisolea (1835-1906) y Eduardo Zamacois (1841-1871). Si bien de entre ellos, en relacion a la influencia de las estampas japonesas en sus obras, y a su gusto por los objetos orientales, solo son destacables las aportaciones de Zamacois. Los otros tres grupos lo conforman la primera generacion de creadores vascos que se instalo en Paris: Anselmo Guinea y Ugalde (1855-1906), Dario de Regoyos Valdes (1857-1913), Adolfo Guiard Larrauri (1860-1916), Pablo Uranga (1861-1934), Francisco Iturrino (1864-1924), Manuel Losada Perez de Nenin ( 1865-1949), Ignacio Zuloaga (1870-1945); la segunda generacion de pintores que acudio al reclamo parisino, de entre los que destacamos a: Angel Larroque Echevarria (1874-1961), Juan de Echevarria Zuricalday (1875-1931), Alberto Arrue Valle (1878-1944), Aurelio Arteta Errasti (1879-1940), Valentin de Zubiaurre (1879-1963), Ramon de Zubiaurre (1882-1969), Gustavo de Maeztu y Withney (1887-1947) y Antonio de Guezala y Ayrivie (1889-1956); para finalizar con la tercera generacion de artistas, representada por: Ricardo Baroja Nessi (1871-1953), Julian de Tellaeche y Aldasoro (1884-1957), Jose Maria de Ucelay y Uriarte (1903-1979), y Nikolas de Lekuona (1913-1937). En sus pinturas, de una u otra manera, se hacen evidentes las aportaciones estilisticas de las estampas realizadas por maestros como Hokusai, Hiroshige, Kunisada y Kunichika entre otros. Obras pertenecientes a generos diversos, desde los retratos de actores y cortesanas, a los paisajes o las leyendas. Para intentar demostrarlo, hemos realizado una comparativa de obras japonesas, europeas y vascas, senalando su cronologia, y apuntando aquellos caracteres que les asemejan, lo que nos permite advertir la influencia de unas sobre otras. En varias obras advertimos elementos compositivos procedentes de la copia de artistas impresionistas, simbolistas y nabis, pero curiosamente en muchos casos los elementos importados parten de la copia directa de modelos de xilografias y objetos decorativos nipones. Las nucas al descubierto, los monos, las diagonales, los arboles en flor, la perspectiva en picado -vista desde arriba-, los primeros planos fragmentados etc., se suceden. Este estudio pretende hacer evidentes esos elementos estilisticos con el fin de poder proclamar la influencia japonesa en los artistas vascos, mas alla de algun ejemplo aislado que se va repitiendo en las publicaciones y catalogos de exposiciones. Asi, a mediados del siglo XIX ya habia un arte vasco consolidado, a traves de cuyas obras se advierte el conocimiento del arte japones, y que a mediados del siglo XX, evoluciono en los artistas de las sucesivas generaciones hacia la abstraccion, el informalismo, el minimalismo... donde tambien es evidente la mirada a la cultura japonesa.
