Title: A Contrasive Study of the Use of Hedges and Boosters Across Deciplines in Persian and English Articles
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of hedges and boosters that are metadiscourse features, used in Persian and English articles inorder to find out whether there is a significant difference between the use of these features in Persian and English articles or not. For this purpose, 120 articles in both Persian and English including economics, medicine, agriculture, computer, law and psychology were randomly chosen. The selected articles were all chosen from valid websites such as SID. The corpus was analyzed according to Hyland's (1998) metadiscourse model and by the use of the non-parametric test of Chi- square. The result of this study showed that more hedges were used in English articles and there was a significant difference in the frequency of these words. On the other hand, there was a different result for boosters. The result made it clear that more boosters were used in Persian articles.
