Abstract: The mid-2000s saw a sudden jag in the public interest in open online real-time virtual worlds, above all in Second Life (SL), which quickly became a hot topic on a variety of other media franchises, attracting the attention of TV talk shows and governments alike. Cao Fei, moreover, tries to give from within the situation ways in which that situation can be collectively reenvisaged; she then exposes this attempt of revisioning as part of the art itself. This is evident from her consistent practice in Second Life. The ongoing adventures of 'China Tracy', Cao Fei's avatar, constitute in themselves a performance with the avatar and its possibilities in SL. Virtual technology, as Cao Fei shows, is at once the most externalized, distributed, and inhuman of experiences-at the moment that we have never been more dependent on such technology for our most intimate quotidian experiences.
