Title: Therapeutic Education for the Patient over 75 Years Old Living at Home
Abstract: A fall, a frequent problem for elderly patients, corresponds to the action of falling to the ground against their will. Of multifactorial origin, it is the main cause of accidental death and is identified as a powerful predictor of institutionalization for the elderly. The Haute autorité de santé (HAS) has defined repeated falls as the occurrence of at least two falls in a time interval ranging from 6 to 12 months. It considers falling as an indicator of poor health status and a marker of frailty in the elderly. According to the Institut national de veille sanitaire, INVS, (National institute of elderly health), every year 450,000 people over the age of 65 fall and 9,300 die. More than half of the falls occur at home. According to recent estimates, one in two people over the age of 80 fall at least once a year. Falls should be considered and managed like any other chronic disease in the elderly. Its prevention is a major public health issue. The multidisciplinary and overall educational approach in the elderly patient with a high risk of falling was cited as an effective therapeutic possibility.
