Yet until recently, these polite acknowledgments have not led them into deeper investigations. Yes, the ethics of a business leader has an influence on the ethics of a business. What is less obvious is the role ethics is playing in the rapidly changing role of leaders and the very concept of leadership in both business and politics. This paper examines the changes in the world and workplace that have led to a greater emphasis on the role of trust in leadership. I begin by examining how some philosophers, writers, and social scientists have thought about leadership. This will not be comprehensive history, but rather a selective one that provides the terms for understanding the changing face of leadership today. I'll then discuss the social factors that have changed the nature of leadership. Lastly, I will talk about future research that may offer insight into how leadership, values, and moral decision making are shaped by access to other cultures.
