Title: Why is Eye Tracking an Essential Part of Neuroergonomics?
Abstract: Eye tracking is a relevant methodology for studying human behavior and performance in neuroergonomics research. Recent progress has made eye tracking less intrusive and easier to use even in the most realistic experimental and natural settings. One benefit of eye tracking is that it enables derivation of both physiological (e.g., pupil diameter) and behavioral (gaze direction) metrics from its users. Pupil diameter is a relevant proxy of internal cognitive and attentional states, while gaze direction reveals visual strategies and patterns of information acquisition. While challenges still exist in terms of signal analysis, eye tracking is an irreplaceable technique with which to design and endow efficient online human–machine interaction systems.
