Title: Bob Marley, Rastafari, and the Jamaican Tourism Product
Abstract: At the University of the West Indies' 1997 presentation of graduates, Christopher Blackwell was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of laws in a ceremony in which Jimmy Cliff was also awarded an honorary doctorate (of letters). In a sense these honours are a type of validation from the academy about the contribution of these men's life work and that these contributions are worthy of the highest academic honours. Among the recipients of this honour are Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I, world renowned folklorist the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley, and the former West Indian cricket captain Clive Lloyd. Bob Marley has not been the recipient of this type of honour.
