Title: Shared Leadership in Teams: An Exploration of Antecedents, Formal Hierarchy & Leadership Dimensions
Abstract: In a steadily growing body of scholarly literature, authors have turned to the notion of “shared leadership” as a means of addressing the current state of empowered organizational team leadership. Studying leadership as a shared phenomenon embraces the uniqueness of operating in autonomous, empowered teams by considering task complexity and the diverse knowledge, skills, and abilities of members embedded within this context. While positive outcomes have been associated with it, shared leadership scholars argue that the field is still in its infancy and that “…numerous dimensions of the phenomenon have received little or no attention” (Conger & Pearce, 2003: 286). Through both theoretical and empirical research, our symposium contributors use a number of methodologies and samples to better understand the underpinnings of shared leadership. First, we present research that develops a systematic theoretical framework to bring together and elaborate upon how members’ relationships determine the advent of shared leadership. Second, we explore how formal hierarchy impacts the informal and emergent leadership dynamics. Finally, we present research that develops a more nuanced description of the configuration of leadership that emerges and identify both the source (i.e., who) and the function (i.e., what) of shared leadership.Shared Leadership in Teams: An Exploration of Antecedents, Formal Hierarchy & Leadership DimensionsPresenter: John Mathieu; U. of ConnecticutPresenter: Lauren D'Innocenzo; U. of ConnecticutExploring Relational & Diversity Antecedents of Shared Leadership in TeamsPresenter: Cécile Emery; London School of EconomicsPresenter: Thomas Stephen Calvard; U. of EdinburghTeam Composition and Shared Leadership: A Study of Leader Personality and Team AttributesPresenter: Jay Carson; Southern Methodist U.Presenter: Christopher O.
