Abstract:The aim of this thesis is to find out how women artists and artists from outside Europe and North America are represented in chapters 19 through 22 of the book A world history of art by Hugh Honour an...The aim of this thesis is to find out how women artists and artists from outside Europe and North America are represented in chapters 19 through 22 of the book A world history of art by Hugh Honour and John Fleming. By examining representation in this part of the book, which is about modern art from 1900 to 2012, using qualitative and quantitative content analysis as well as cultural theorist Stuart Hall’s theories about representation, the art historical canon presented by the book is described and analysed. The results of the quantitative analysis shows that an overwhelming majority of all the artists mentioned in the text and images are male and from either Europe or North America – as many as 89% of all mentioned artists are male and 96% are from Europe or North America. The qualitative analysis further explores the ways in which women and non-European- or North American artists are excluded form this part of the book. (Less)Read More
