Adhesive bonds in the passenger car tyre/road surface contact have a large influence on the contact dynamics for certain tyre/road combinations. The effect is most pronounced for road surfaces with low roughness, so-called smooth surfaces. The separation process was studied for separation of tread blocks from road surface samples and relations between initial conditions and the measured adherence force was studied. The nonlinear process at the interface also influence the separation viewed on a macroscopic scale. The relation between noise generation and adherence force was in addition investigated. Adhesive forces in the tyre/road contact cause enhanced rolling resistance and noise generation. The importance of adhesion for the noise generation in tyre/road contacts has been demonstrated in full-scale experimental studies of tyre rolling on roads, or test-drums.Read More
