Title: The “5.5cm Rule” versus Beam F3: Assessing precision, accuracy, and variability in targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for clinical treatment of major depressive disorder using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation
Abstract: Introduction: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the left prefrontal cortex is an FDA-approved treatment for medication-resistant major depressive disorder (MDD)1. Although some techniques exist for standardizing target location, there are many sources of human and technological variability which can affect reliable day-to-day targeting of the same region within and across subjects2. Additionally, there are several different targeting methods in use for identifying the specific prefrontal target location. This study aims to quantify the levels of precision and reliability which can be achieved with clinical rTMS targeting without the use of neuronavigation equipment.
