Abstract: Minoletti outlines women's political participation in Myanmar from the 1920s–2010s, and the impact that Myanmar women have on politics. Women's participation was extremely low in the colonial and early independence eras and was restricted further under the military dictatorships of 1962–2010. However, the end of military rule has created space for some improvement in women's political participation, and women are now around 10% of MPs. Further, the (de facto) leader of the country is now a woman. Minoletti explores the current and potential consequences of increases in women's political participation by examining the kinds of women who are elected, gender differences in citizens' policy preferences, gender differences in the behaviour of political leaders and citizens' perceptions of women leaders.
