Title: Bearing Witness to Suffering: Participating in Cotranscendence
Abstract: In this article, the phenomena of bearing witness – not bearing witness, a paradoxical rhythm, and of having another bear witness to one’s experience are explored in relation to suffering and healing. The burgeoning interest of nurses in bearing witness, in theory, research, and practice is noted. Ethical dimensions of bearing witness – not bearing witness are adduced for consideration. It is suggested that what happens when nurses truly bear witness to the lived experiences of those to whom they provide care, processes associated with transcendence of suffering are enhanced.
