Title: Culture and propagation of native [Philippines] catfish (Clarias macrocephalus)
Abstract: Native catfish breeders were obtained from a pool of broodstock (Aurora, Palawan and local market) maintained at FAC-CLSU [Freshwater Aquaculture Center-Central Luzon State University, Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines]. Prior to hormone induction the breeders were fed with artificial diet and chopped trash fish to ripen them further. Selected female breeders were canulated from their ovary by inserting a soft silicon rubber tubing (3 mm in diameter) into the genital opening of the fish by gently aspirating the oocytes by mouth. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the potency of Chorolun in induced spawning of native catfish. The Chorolun was provided by the InterNet Int'l. B.V. Boxmeer (Holland) thru Metrovet (Philippines). Result showed a highly significiant difference (P less than 0.01) in the number of females spawning using Chorolun. Results of the experiment support Richter et.al. 1989 on the repeated use of human chorionic gonadotrophin (Chorolun) in inducing spawning in female African catfish (C. gariepinus)
