Title: Parallel and Distributed Discrete Event Simulation
Abstract: This chapter discusses the applications of parallel and distributed discrete event simulation (PDES) algorithms for discrete event models. Although focused on DEVS models, many of the conclusions apply generally due to the universality of DEVS for discrete event systems. In this edition, based on experience with implementation of Parallel DEVS simulation algorithms, we present a Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) of PDES software development that takes into account both the objectives and the structures of the models to be simulated. Also, we focused on the critical path of a simulation as the most costly sequence of computations that must be executed to complete a simulation run. This approach allows us to better understand the strengths and limitations of traditional PDES algorithms, also reviewed here, and how the canonical Parallel DEVS simulation protocol provides a vehicle for general robust simulation with near optimal performance from the perspective of our cost-based approach to simulation.
