Title: A Sociolinguistic Consideration of Linguistic Landscape in Jeju
Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to investigate the linguistic landscape in two different places in city of Jeju. In order to see how linguistic landscape is designed, they are chosen as representative samples in new town and old town in Jeju city. The data consisted of the public and private signs were photographed and collected on site. Then, the collected data were analyzed and classified based on the basis of Backhaus` research questions and analytical categories. They include some aspects of linguistic landscaping by whom: the sign writers, linguistic landscaping for whom: the sign readers, and linguistic landscape quo vadis. Linguistic landscape in two localities which holds its informational and symbolic function, enables us to foresee who will be the store visitors and who will be the customers for the stores. It is therefore expected that multilingual signs are much more than monolingual ones on Baozen Street in new town versus in old town, which enables us to predict there are more foreign customer visiting in new town than in old town. As a result, it seems that linguistic overview from a linguistic analysis provides some insight into the better understanding of language use in Jeju.
