Title: Role of Lead Firm in Developing An Agro-Based Cluster: A Study
Abstract: Founding of the lead firms is documented as one of the triggering events in the emergence of a cluster. The lead firms play multiple roles in catalysing the process of cluster development by shaping the knowledge, innovation and production systems of the cluster. The present research adopts a qualitative approach involving an in-depth single case descriptive study of the lead firm in a cluster. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with the general manager of the concerned firm, manager of a rival firm, enquiry into secondary sources including reports prepared by the organisation and a visit to the entities developed by the firm. ‘Unati’, though being an SME, anchors the cluster through its diversified networks with various R&D institutions and public resources. The organisation’s collaboration with R&D institutions for the upscaling of their inventions results in mutual benefit for both the parties and at cluster level helps spawn new businesses in the form of suppliers to Unati. This kind of ‘brokerage’ role played by the firm helps it in overcoming its size constraint and integrates its production system with its innovation system.
