Published before the November 2017 killing of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh by his one-time foes and erstwhile Houthi partners, Hill's analysis of Saleh's rise and fall provides essential context for scholars and policy-makers looking to understand the trajectory of Yemen's recent history. Combining a journalist's flair with the deep expertise from more than a decade of living in, working on and writing about Yemen, Hill weaves together the stories of Yemenis from several hundred interviews in a style that is both engaging and accessible. The focus of Yemen endures is on the events of 2011 and their aftermath. Among states that experienced the fall of longstanding leaders in the Arab Spring, Yemen was the only one where the ousted leader remained not only in the country but also politically active. Saleh returned from medical treatment in Saudi Arabia to Yemen in September 2011. This greatly complicated the political transition put in place by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, led by Saudi Arabia, not least because ‘the substructure of Saleh's regime remained intact’ (p. 7). Saleh remained the head of the General People's Congress—Yemen's largest political movement—and, protected by a domestic immunity deal negotiated as part of the GCC transition plan, was able to ‘continue to meddle in Yemeni politics, with dangerous consequences’ (p. 242).Read More
