Title: The economic impacts of different types of tourism in upland and mountain areas of Europe.
Abstract: An analysis of the economic impacts of different types of tourism development in upland rural areas of Europe is presented. Based on empirical research carried out in Portugal, France, and the UK which compared the economic impacts of hard tourism (large-scale, capital-intensive developments) with soft tourism (small-scale, land based enterprises), it discusses the role of tourism activity in the context of rural development policy, and considers the significance for tourism development of both locally specific factors, and wider economic and political changes that are reshaping the socio-economic fabric of rural areas of Europe. It questions the degree to which soft tourism can deliver the same economic benefits as hard tourism in all mountain regions. On the one hand, soft tourism fits the model of development with regard to local community empowerment and benefits, on the other hand, the long-term profitability, demand and local linkages of tourism are highly variable and dependent on specific political and economic contexts already in place.
