Abstract: This article offers an overview of the Coast Guard's Search and Rescue (SAR) system, which is comprised of Rescue Coordination Centers (RCC) and Subcenters and other subordinate operations and communications centers. The author reviews the extensive communications network that ties these centers together and explains how the resulting operation works. Other topics covered include the goals for incident response and life-saving, the crucial need for personnel, the use of civilian SAR watchstander billets, and improvements made to the SAR system in the areas of communications, satellite services, and the SAR Optimal Planning System (SAROPS) computer program. The author concludes with a brief description of a training analysis that is currently underway to evaluate the training needs for watchstanders who will be staffing future Command Center positions.
