Title: Models to estimate revegetation potentials of land surface mined for coal in the west. General technical report
Abstract: Practical criteria for measuring success of revegetation of land surface mined for coal in the West, namely, the amount of forage produced and the density of plant cover developed, are affected significantly by at least two major climatic factors that are not readily susceptible to alteration (precipitation and growing season length); by three properties of spoil materials that are subject to limited modification through management (potassium, sodium, and pH). Revegetation success is also influenced by seven revegetation treatments, each of which provides at least two management alternatives, and by the age of the vegetation. These characteristics account for from one-half to three-fourths of the total variance in forage production and plant cover density on these revegetated lands.
