Title: On Pure Torsion of a Cantilevered Open Section
Abstract: Non-uniform torsion of an elastic torsion bar leads invariably to nonlinear normal stresses in addition to those obtained without consideration of changes of geometry due to deformation. The nonlinearity of the resultant stress system has an effect upon the location of the twist centre and thus on the applicability of Maxwell’s reciprocity theorem. Because of several pronounced characteristics, a STEM tube cantilever subjected to a pure torque at the free end has been chosen for the discussion. It is found that Maxwell’s reciprocity theorem becomes less valid, the longer the torsion bar and the larger the applied torque.
