Title: Smart Traffic Density Management System Using Image Processing
Abstract: With the population increasing manifold, the existing resources and infrastructure are not able to cope up with it for obvious reasons. Over the last few years, advancement in technology has led to growth in production of automobiles. More and more efforts are being made to ensure comparatively cheaper availability of vehicles for common man to afford it. On one hand, where the availability of vehicles is being facilitated, there are no outstanding improvements in the infrastructure In a city like Mumbai, heavy traffic is a major issue and it has become a growing concern as it is causing great distress to the citizens here. This is not just the story of Mumbai; major cities across the globe are facing such issues and are finding ways to mend them. As the famous saying goes, ‘Rome was not built in a day’, expecting radical changes in the present infrastructure overnight is impractical and a very demanding task in itself. A better solution would be bringing in sophistication in the present infrastructure using technology and making the conditions better. Considering the most vital element of the traffic system, the traffic signal; this project aims at bringing the necessary sophistication in the way signals work with the help of image processing. A basic camera mounted on the top of existing traffic signals can be used for this purpose. Further, using MATLAB coding and basic image processing principles, the desired sophistication can be achieved. In the present system, each signal has predefined signal timing irrespective of the density of traffic in the lanes. A less populated lane will have comparatively the same signal time as that of more congested lane. This is where the present system’s drawback lies. Equal signal timing for each lane without considering the factor of density of traffic results in inefficiency and is something which needs improvement. In addition to this, there is a great inconvenience caused to ambulance service due to the present working of the traffic signal. There have been several cases where the ambulance cannot move because the cars ahead of the ambulance are stuck due to the signal. A system where detection of ambulance in a particular lane will give immediate green signal access to that particular lane is developed. Such a system can prove of great importance during incidents where the need of ambulance is inevitable and the patient is in a critical condition.
