Title: Contributors to the original description of Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801) (Branchiopoda, Notostraca)
Abstract: In October 1729 Jacob Theodor Klein, secretary of the city of Danzig, sent letters to Johann Leonhard Frisch in Berlin and Hans Solane in London containing a description and paintings of the notostracan Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801). One of these letters was translated into German and published by Frisch in 1732; the other was published in the original Latin in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1737. We provide a biographical sketch of Klein and conclude that the original observations were made by Johann Philipp Breyne or Johann Christoph Bohlius, and provide biographical sketches of Breyne and Bohlius, partially based on previously unknown sources. We also provide for the first time a reproduction of the watercolor painting of T. cancriformis, dated 1729, which is held by the Archives of the Royal Society in London.
