Title: Reading Landscape - Two Artists on Recent Work
Abstract: Invitation to present to the GSA Research Day on behalf of the Reading Landscape Research Group.
The presentation took place on 19 February 2016 in the Reid Building and I presented the work from the Research Trip 'Practising Landscape Research ' in November 2015 to Orkney, with Dr. Nicky Bird
The Reading Landscape Research Group was initiated in June 2014 and has subsequently become an exemplar of good practice in establishing further research groupings within the School of Fine Art. The ‘Reading Landscape’ group was established by Susan Brind (Reader in Contemporary Art: Practice & Events, Department of Sculpture & Environmental Art) and Dr Nicky Bird (Reader in Contemporary Photographic Practice and PhD Co-ordinator, School of Fine Art). The research group, established on the basis of in-depth knowledge of colleagues’ research and practice, is based in GSA’s School of Fine Art (SoFA). The group, which aims to meet at least twice per semester, provides a context for Fine Art practice and research interests to be shared and enhanced through a programme of research seminars, and knowledge exchange. In addition to this, practice-led research projects are undertaken: both within the group; and beyond the institution through individuals' practice as well as through international project links. This case study charts the make-up, focus and development of the Reading Landscape Research group over the past 3 years.
The Group’s aims are to:
• Enable the opportunity for critical discourse around the overarching theme of ‘Reading Landscape’ and its relationship to Fine Art practice;
• Extend debate beyond the confines of the Group to other Schools within GSA;
• Participate in critical discourse with practitioners and academics from disciplines
beyond Art, Design & Architecture;
• Engage with discourse nationally and internationally;
• Nurture possible partnerships and inter-disciplinary collaborations;
• Make public their research to local, national and international audiences through talks, research visits, exhibitions, seminars, conferences and publications.
