Title: Exploring the role of “honour” in son preference and daughter deficit within the Punjabi diaspora in Canada
Abstract: This article engages with discourses surrounding "honour-related violence", son preference and daughter deficit in Punjabi Sikh communities of northern India and Canada. I contextualise son preference within historical and contemporary understandings of "izzat" or family "honour" and explore how second-generation Punjabi women navigate the boundaries placed on their bodies while the men in their lives, including their brothers, are expected to maintain izzat through policing and punishing. Using post-structural feminism, critical race theory and narrative methodology, I argue that preventing gender-based violence, son preference and daughter elimination requires both a deeper awareness of izzat and more research with second-generation Punjabi men.
