It outlines the recent developments in the field of strategic management theory. The chapter defines what is really meant by "firm performance" and clarify the role of the firm's shareholders (owners) as well as other stakeholders relevant to this definition. It introduces various tools for strategic analysis that deal with analyzing the external environment of the company. The chapter also outlines how managers can identify, build, and leverage internal resources to enhance the firm's performance, both in an intentionally planned manner based on the firm's existing set of resources, as well as in an emergent manner that is reactive to changes in the firm's external environment. It also introduce the logic of the so-called resource-based view (RBV) of the firm and how it can be applied in the context of a chemical company.Read More
