Griffith’s masterful account has a broad sweep, centered on the question of how Christian moral assumptions shape American laws and politics and how those assumptions have been specifically, and religiously, preoccupied with sex. Throughout the century, Griffith argues, this concern with sex has shaped “debates about women’s rights, gender roles, and sexual mores” (ix). Griffith maps both traditionalist and progressive responses to sexuality, arguing that those responses provide a model for understanding other reactions to modern issues, from diversity to science. While Griffith’s narrow focus on the political implications of religion and sexuality means that many aspects of the religious history of sexuality are necessarily left out of the text, the result is an eminently teachable and incredibly readable crossover book that will bring the co-constituting relationship between religion, sex, and American politics to a wide readership.Read More
