Title: Safeguarding Children: Debates and Dilemmas for Health Visitors
Abstract: This chapter contextualizes child abuse and neglect in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting) practice. Relevant key concepts including child, childhood, safeguarding, child protection, child abuse, significant harm are critically explored in the context of practice. The incidence and prevalence of child abuse and the assessment of vulnerable children are also addressed. The chapter ends with a discussion of the challenges encountered in working together with other professionals and agencies involved in safeguarding children whilst exploring the value of health visitors accessing high quality child protection supervision.
