Title: Useless Beauty Up Late: Jewellery in the Ancient and Modern World
Abstract: The 2016 R.D. Milns Antiquities Museum ‘Up Late Series’ was a program of public panel discussions drawing on the Museum collection in conjunction with the 2016-2017 Exhibition ‘Useless Beauty: Luxury and Rome’, in order to disseminate research about the collection and the exhibition to the wider public, as well as to members of the University community. In addition, this series also explored the relationship between the Classical and Modern worlds by inviting in speakers from outside the University who were experts in related fields.The first of these public panels took place on November 25th 2016. Speakers were Dr Janette McWilliam, Museum Director and Senior Curator, Dr Shushma Malik, Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History UQ, and Ms Elizabeth Shaw, practicing silversmith and Senior Lecturer in Jewellery and Small Objects, Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. The panel discussed with their audience the relationship between luxury and jewellery in the ancient and modern worlds.
